Special Monthly Compensation

Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) is a higher rate of compensation paid to Veterans with very severe disabilities or combinations of disabilities.

How it works

SMC levels like SMC-L through SMC-O generally supplant the standard 100% rating. If you qualify, you are paid the SMC rate instead of the 100% rate because it is significantly higher.

Add-on Rates

SMC-K is an add-on. It is added to your base rating (even at 10%, 50%, or 100%) for the loss of use of specific organs or extremities.

The 100% + 60% Rule

SMC-S (Housebound) is often awarded if you have one condition rated at 100% and other independent conditions that combine to at least 60%.

🍕 The VA “Pizza” Math

VA math is different. Ratings aren't added together (30% + 30% ≠ 60%). Instead, think of your health as a Whole Pizza.
